I placed an unwanted CD on top of my 1" dia brass spherical discharge terminal. My coil has variable output from 1/2" sparks to about 8". I turned on the coil with it set on "low". I got the expected corona around the edges of the disk. I slowly turned up the power and an arc started from the hub and went to the surface of the plastic where the thin layer of metal starts. The arc spins around the disk and as it does it disentigrates the metal part of the disc as well as burning off the ink on the printed side. The interesting thing is aside from some warping of the plastic from the heat generated, the plastic is almost completely undamaged! The ink does seem to scorch it in spots as it usually starts to burn, but on the data side the plastic stays smooth and clear. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this, it does make for a nice display.
